Steel Structure Buildings Emerge as the Mainstream of Prefabricated Construction

Steel structure buildings represent a novel architectural system, widely favored by the industry due to their advantages such as light self-weight, rapid installation, excellent seismic performance, fast investment return, and minimal environmental pollution. Influenced by national policies advocating green energy conservation, environmental protection, and resource recycling, steel structures are increasingly being utilized in prefabricated building construction, leading to a continuous expansion of the industry scale.
Currently, although China's application level of steel structure buildings lags behind that of developed countries, drawing on the development experience of foreign steel-framed prefabricated buildings, coupled with domestic policy impacts, it is foreseeable that the steel structure industry will undergo rapid development, and steel structure buildings will inevitably become the mainstream choice for prefabricated construction.
The steel structure industry is growing swiftly. Based on the classification of prefabricated building structural systems, prefabricated buildings can be divided into precast concrete structures, steel structures, and wooden structures. Among them, steel structures consist of beams, columns, steel trusses, and other components supported by steel sections and plates. These components or parts are typically connected using welds, bolts, or rivets.
In industrially developed countries, the amount of steel used in construction accounts for 60% of the country's steel production and over 55% of total steel consumption. The use of steel in steel structures constitutes more than 40% of steel production, and the floor area of steel structure buildings comprises approximately 40% of the total building area. In contrast, China's current steel consumption in construction accounts for about 15-20% of national steel production and 25% of total steel consumption. The proportion of steel used in steel structures in China's steel production is less than 3%. Thus, there is immense potential for growth.
