Key Points for Installation of Steel Columns in Steel Structure Factory Construction

  Steel columns are one of the main components in steel structure factories. As the name implies, steel columns are pillars made of steel, with two types of cross-sectional forms: solid web columns and lattice columns. For steel column installation, components should undergo re-inspection upon arrival at the site and during installation. Their attributes such as number, size, shape, and connection hole positions must match the drawings before installation can proceed.

  1.Elevation Observation Points and Centerline Markers Before Steel Column Installation:

  Elevation observation points and centerline markers should be set up before installing steel columns. The locations of observation points and markers should be consistent across a factory project and comply with the following regulations:

  •   The setup of elevation observation points should comply with the following regulations: They should be based on the bearing surface of the corbel (shoulder beam) and located on the column where it is easy to observe. For columns without corbels (shoulder beams), the top center of the column where it connects to the truss, specifically the uppermost mounting hole, should be used as the benchmark.

  •   The setup of centerline markers should comply with the following regulations: One center marker should be set in the direction of the row line on the upper surface of the column baseplate, and one on each side of the column in the direction of the column line. On the column surface, one centerline should be set in the direction of the row line and one in the direction of the column line. Each centerline should have a center marker at the bottom, middle (corbel or shoulder beam area), and top of the column. For columns with double corbels (shoulder beams), center markers should be set on both column surfaces in the direction of the row line.

  2.Multi-section Column Assembly and Lifting:

  During steel structure factory construction, multi-section columns should be assembled into a whole before lifting.

  3.Correction of Steel Column Installation:

  Steel column installation corrections should comply with the following regulations: Corrections should account for deviations caused by lateral sunlight exposure. Verticality deviations of columns should be controlled based on temperature (season). After installing and adjusting crane beams and roof trusses, as well as securing connections, steel columns should undergo re-measurement. Any deviations exceeding the allowable limits should be promptly adjusted.

  4.Temporary Fixation for Tall, Slender Columns:

  For columns with a relatively large slenderness ratio, temporary fixation measures should be added after lifting.

  5.Installation of Bracing Between Columns:

  Bracing between columns should be installed after aligning the columns, ensuring that the columns are vertical during installation.
