Does Steel-framed Housing Rust Easily?

2025-01-22    190

When considering the relationship between steel-framed houses and rainwater, many immediately envision rust due to exposure to water. Traditional steel structures, subjected to the elements, indeed rust quickly, sparking understandable concerns. But can today's popular steel-framed houses withstand rainy seasons?

First, let's talk about the corrosion resistance of steel itself. Traditional steel exposed to air and rain rusts swiftly. However, modern light steel-framed houses use galvanized steel, coated with a zinc-aluminum alloy. When this coating contacts a corrosive agent, the zinc corrodes first. As it does, the aluminum exposed to air forms a dense, stable oxide film, protecting the remaining zinc. Experiments have proven this effectiveness.

  Corrosion Test Results:

  • Unprotected Steel Rebar: Rusts immediately in a 5% salt spray environment.

  • Ordinary Heavy Steel: With simple coatings, experiences significant corrosion within seven days.

  • Galvanized Light Steel: Remains smooth and bright with minimal corrosion.

Beyond the steel's corrosion resistance, steel-framed houses employ multiple barriers to isolate the frame from the outside: thick moisture barriers on foundations, double-layer waterproof asphalt on floors, and black waterproof membranes at the frame.

Moisture-resistant breathable paper (waterproof yet permeable) between OSB and silicate calcium boards ensures wall waterproofing and regulates indoor humidity. Eaves extending 300mm-600mm directly drain water, with dedicated plumbing. The roof is fully paved with waterproof membranes, with special treatment at eaves. Asphalt shingles, known for their excellent waterproofing, allow water to bead and fall off, achieving 360-degree moisture protection.

The roof system of steel-framed houses is waterproof, making steel-framed structures versatile, resilient, and widely applicable. They can be built in steep or harsh environments with advantages. Thus, they are trusted choices for service buildings like leisure farms, tourist attractions, private villas, clubs, and garden management houses.
